Lunar New Year 2026: Year of the Horse

The official first day of Lunar New Year is determined by the first new moon after a cycle of 12 moons: this year, The Year of the Horse begins on February 17th, and the celebration takes place over 8 days. Lunar New Year is celebrated around the world by many different cultures, although not all of them in January or February. On Granville Island, we celebrate the Lunar New Year that is one of the most commonly recognized in Asia and celebrated by millions of people in Canada.

For 5 years, Lantern City has included Granville Island as one of its venues to display giant lanterns designed by local artists that reflect the astrological year as well as a corresponding theme:

Brave the Wind

“The Year of the Horse gallops in with fierce energy—untamed, enduring, and swift. Horses charge forward even in the face of a storm, guided by instinct and resilience. Inspired by this noble spirit, “Brave the Wind” becomes LunarFest’s call for courage: a challenge to each of us to move forward through life’s turbulence with grace, conviction, and openness.”

Created by local artists, including some from Arts Umbrella, the lanterns will populate Ocean Artworks from February 14th to March 8th. Their size, colours, and artistic interpretation will take your breath away; take some time to wander through the display so you can see them from all angles!

In addition to the lanterns, LunarFest is offering artistic workshops, treats, and more; visit their website for more information.
