SUMMARY:Canoe Cultures - Canoe Carving Demonstrations
DESCRIPTION:Canoe Cultures is a local community organization that celebrates resiliency by bringing forth the War Canoe as a vessel which carries gifts forward for future generations.  Carvers from Squamish and Snuneymuxw First Nations honour the strong cultural connection the canoe has to the lands and the waters.  Carvers will be working on their newest design\, a cedar strip 6-person war canoe. They will also be working on paddles and other associated artwork. The experience of crafting a dugout from a massive single red cedar log or red cedar strip is a rare opportunity as there are few canoe carvers left in Canada to pass the knowledge on to their communities. As part of the Canoe Culture Program\, Lead Carver Mike Billy Sr. addresses the cultural transmission of Indigenous knowledge from one generation to the next.

DESCRIPTION:This 2-hour creative workshop is designed to help participants tap into the body as an instrument and source of wisdom\, laying the foundation for authentic collaboration. We begin with grounding practices: breathwork and gentle movement to awaken embodied awareness. Participants will engage in collective sharing\, visioning and the creation of poetry and sound. Participants will then be invited to debut these new in-process works at the evening show! \nThis workshop is geared towards Poets and Storytellers\, Vocalists\, Musicians\, Movement Artists\, Queer creatives looking to explore the collective collaboration\, anyone interested in deepening their community based arts practice\, those interested in collective\, communal performance\, anyone looking for and open to new collaborators and collaborations\, and those deeply interested in and invested in process over product. This workshop isn’t for you if you are solely interested in individual performance and/or looking for a traditional open mic opportunity. \nA maximum of 20 participants can register for this workshop

SUMMARY:Canoe Cultures @ Ocean Artworks
DESCRIPTION:Canoe Cultures celebrates resiliency by bringing forth the War Canoe as a vessel which carries gifts forward for future generations.  Carvers from Squamish and Snuneymuxw First Nations honour the strong cultural connection the canoe has to the lands and the waters.  Carvers will be working on their newest design\, a cedar strip 6-person war canoe. They will also be working on paddles and other associated artwork. The experience of crafting a dugout from a massive single red cedar log or red cedar strip is a rare opportunity as there are few canoe carvers left in Canada to pass the knowledge on to their communities. As part of the Canoe Culture Program\, Lead Carver Mike Billy Sr. addresses the cultural transmission of Indigenous knowledge from one generation to the next. \nIn addition to the canoe carving installation this year\, programming will include a pop-up artisan market featuring a variety of talented Indigenous crafters and makers\, curated by the Canoe Cultures organizers.
