SUMMARY:q̓emxwéqsem (to tie a knot at the end of your thread)
DESCRIPTION:Serena Steel’s exhibition\, q̓emxwéqsem (to tie a knot at the end of your thread)\, celebrates the intricate art of hand-stitching\, embodying meticulous craftsmanship reminiscent of traditional Secwépemc practices such as beadwork and basketry. Each artwork is a deliberate creation that reflects Steel’s deep connection to her land and cultural heritage. \nThrough her works\, Steel explores themes of belonging and stewardship\, infusing every object with personal memories and stories that anchor her to her home. q̓emxwéqsem serves as a poignant reminder of the value of slow\, deliberate work in an era dominated by mass production and rapid consumption\, emphasizing the importance of craftsmanship and the ceremonial nature of each stitch.

SUMMARY:Les Grandes Dames
DESCRIPTION:Les Grande Dames is an assemblage of figures depicting women as distinct entities. Artist Debra Sloan’s objective has been to add her visual voice to those who have been and are involved in repositioning the rights and personhood of women. This is also a cautionary tale. Women’s rights have existed only within narrow bands of history and usually involving only a portion of the world’s women\, which\, during this last century\, some have been experiencing – but storm clouds loom.

SUMMARY:The land dreams in ceremonies: reparation
DESCRIPTION:Through Ukrainian folk-knowledge and crafts\, along with ceremonies timed by the old calendar (moon cycles – misyats’)\, Nikki Manzie explores the intersection of tradition with direct relationship with the land\, and what it means to root ancestral knowledge in a good way in territories where she is an uninvited guest. Her methodology includes deep listening\, reading the symbols and signs\, dreams\, research\, relationship-building\, mentorship\, and apprenticeship. This exhibit documents her experiences\, the resulting crafts\, and the progression of personal land reparation ceremonies. It asks audiences to engage in the questions and material for themselves.

SUMMARY:VMAA - Evolving Spaces: Transitional in Nature
DESCRIPTION:We are celebrating a decade of the Vancouver Metal Arts Association and we are very excited to invite you to our biennial Juried Exhibition at the Craft Council of British Columbia.\nThe Vancouver metal arts association welcomes jewellers\, metal artists and students of these disciplines to participate in this edition called Evolving Spaces: Transitional in Nature. \nWhen a physical or emotional space breaks its state and can no longer foster us\, we push forward under new conditions. Shrinking rooms\, displacement\, changes of perspective\, self discovery\, and the search for safety are some of the many things that can propel us to a new normal. But what do we find in those liminal spaces that we all inhabit? In between what is lost and what will be gained we may discover what is. VMAA asks the artists to create work that explores what becomes present in those evolving spaces.

SUMMARY:of special concern (extirpated\, endangered\, threatened)
DESCRIPTION:Faro Annie Sullivan’s ceramic installation is a physical representation of 103 BC birds\, each red or blue listed on the species list. This work is part of an ongoing witnessing of the present state of species and biodiversity within the province. \nThe handmade and pit-fired ceramic birds hang from the ceiling in a flock\, hovering around a raku-fired urn inscribed with their names. The installation brings the viewer into direct contact with these threatened birds: the material manifestation of a number\, a statistic.

SUMMARY:Phase Transition
DESCRIPTION:The Craft Council of BC presents Phase Transition\, a mixed-media installation by Jenny Judge. The term phase transition references a physical shifting of material from one phase to another. Judge uses this concept to drip wet paint that transitions and solidifies on its downward journey along a thread. It covers objects and creates new forms while the original becomes less recognizable – reflecting on our memories as time passes.

SUMMARY:Kaisa Lindfors – How to feel full: ceramic vases and cages
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition and artist talk by Revelstoke ceramist Kaisa Lindfors exploring memory & experience. \nLindfors presents a new body of work that includes a series of vessels that are painted and written on using excerpts from her journal – visual and written – juxtaposing the fragile yet long lasting nature of the material against the making of a usually private practice: both permanent and fragile\, quiet and public.

SUMMARY:Carrying Water by Bettina Matzkuhn
DESCRIPTION:Water\, in a geopolitical frame\, is a most precious resource. Many predict it will become a major source of conflict. With fluctuating weather patterns\, the BC coast has experienced a shortage of water resulting in fires and droughts\, and an excess leading to floods. Bettina Matzkuhn celebrates the water cycle and considers ways to protect it through interactive fibre works that have outdoorsy\, synthetic exteriors that open to embroidered landscapes.

SUMMARY:The Chorus by Joanna Rogers
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Rogers’\, The Chorus\, consists of a series of weavings\, each containing their own Morse code message. The weavings create an abstracted Analytical Engine programmed to transform the past into the present and to translate the future into cryptic Cassandrian prophesies. The weavings—approximately 15 feet in length—hang down like banners or scrolls pooling onto plinths\, resembling sunlight streaming through stained glass windows. The summer and winter patterns are made by blocks of contrasting colours\, remarkably translating Morse code into a pattern. Within each weaving\, the message is repeated as if this repetition might make it clearer. However\, most of us cannot decipher Morse code and even if we could\, without a cipher to the weavings the messages are lost to us—as will be our endangered species.

SUMMARY:FRAMED
DESCRIPTION:The Craft Council of British Columbia presents our inaugural fundraising auction and exhibition\, FRAMED. We have invited artists to envision a frame (think picture frame\, glasses frames\, or doorframe) as art itself rather than as supplementary object. We have encouraged artists to think beyond the frame as protector\, support and cradle and to explore the complexity of the frame in their respective media. \nFRAMED will be held from February 15 to March 1\, 2021 at the CCBC gallery. We have welcomed submissions from artists working with various craft and mixed media. Submitted frames will be on view and sold via silent auction with a minimum starting bid of $75.
